The Murder Bag is a definite departure from Tony Parsons' usual family drama based books. I was interested to see if I would love the new direction as much as the old. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the murder aspect of the story. Whereas the family dynamic between DC Max Wolfe and his daughter Scout I absolutely loved. Those of us of a certain age remember Tony Parsons when he and Julie Burchill were the enfants terrible of the NME. More recently, both of them seem to have morphed into vaguely establishment writers – and Parsons has now moved into the genre fiction playground. If you’re someone who demands absolute reality in the way the police operate, then The Murder Bag probably won’t bear too close a scrutiny. Tony Parsons has fashioned a fiendishly plotted, chilling and unexpectedly moving thriller. The Murder Bag is pacy and passionate, often beautifully written, with a genuinely surprising final twist. Detective Max Wolfe has just the right balance of compassion and rage.
